Figure & Ground

When working on these Figure and Ground assignments, it was apparent that finding the flow of the overall figures would prove to be the easiest part. The one that was next in-line was creating a balance of thick and thin strokes while maintaining the contrasting curvature of spirals, versus hard-edged geometric forms. This combined with a need to create a rhythm and flow, led to the conclusion to maintain a simplistic zigzag pattern. Another goal was to focus the patterns and continuous elements more on the strokes than counters, however the end result maintained the use of counters nonetheless. The final piece employs several gestalt principles including Continuous, Closure, and Alignment to guide the eyes, connecting one path to another. Like a dance or a stream of water, the letters flow.
